I run after Dylan upstairs. I take the bathroom and Dylan takes the bedroom Renee is staying in. But Renee isn’t anywhere to be found. Her bed is made and her closet empty, but then it always was. She’d stopped by her house yesterday with Gage to change before she went into the station.

Dylan says, “Maybe she went home for more clothes?”

“Could be.” Or maybe she didn’t want to be arrested, so she left town. Better to keep that thought to myself, though. “I doubt she’d go for a run. She’s still limping from her bike injuries.”

Dylan stops searching through drawers and says, “Maybe she’s at her spot. I’m sure Gage told her I’d most likely have to take her into custody today.”

Her spot. High on the cliffs overlooking the ocean, she always went to as a kid when her parents were fighting again or she was upset about something. Why didn’t I think of that? “I’ll go look. Can you at least ask the lab people to check the watch data starting last May? Please? In the meantime, I promise I’ll bring Renee to you at the station as soon as I find her.”

Dylan pulls his phone from his pocket and taps out a message. “I updated the lab and asked for a rush. That’s the best I can do. Go open your shop, and I’ll find Renee.”

“But—”

Dylan cuts me off. “Don’t make this harder than it already is. I’ll talk to you later.” He turns to leave.

I follow him down the stairs and ask, “What about Kate? Why isn’t she locked up too?”

Dylan hits the bottom step and heads for the front door. “She’s being kept somewhere safe. Call me if you hear from Renee.”

Somewhere safe? In Sunset Cove? Nowhere is safe from gossip in this town. Everyone will know where she’s staying within an hour. Unless… Before he can make it to the door, I say, “Stop right there, Dylan Cooper.”

He turns around. “I’m in a hurry, Sawyer.”

I catch up to him in the hall and cross my arms, whispering so Brittany won’t hear in the kitchen. “Since when is it the sheriff’s job to keep beautiful suspects in his guest room? Assuming that’s the bed she slept in.”

Dylan runs a hand down his face. “Since when do you care who spends the night at my house? Not that I’m saying she did.”

Oh, she did all right. Dylan’s red cheeks prove it.

I tamp down the pangs of jealousy I have no right to have. We haven’t been together for years. “I’m just saying it’s not fair to arrest Renee and then let Kate run free. Kate has a motive, and she was nearby during the murder. She’d been having an affair with Zach, and she has a computer science degree. Those things are just as incriminating as what you have against Renee. And yet, you’re going to make breakfast and bat your eyelashes at Kate while throwing Renee in jail. Renee, who you’ve know all your life, I might add!” So much for staying calm.
